Cheesey, saucey, doughy, nostalgia-y.

Even if you weren't raised on pizza, Hounddog's Pizza will take you back. The generous portions of tomato sauce and melted mozzarella cradled in that classic, satisfying crust bring a comfort no other food can provide. It helps that the ingredients are high in both quantity and quality. Hounddog's menu is loaded with creativity, from their specialty pies and spicy sauces to the requisite Midwest dip options.

Bucking the Columbus style trend, Hounddog's serves up a thicker crust and slices it pie-cut rather than tavern-cut. That extra heft, combined with the lavish toppings, makes these pies wonderfully filling yet surprisingly affordable—and the good news is that any leftovers reheat just as well as they baked.

Arrive early to enjoy the palatial wood-furnished bar before they transition to carry-out only near closing. Order at least one pizza "Smokin' Joes" with a spicy sauce alongside one of their canine-named signature pies. Pair your slices with a soda in a retro red plastic cup or a cold beer from the bar, and soak in the timeless vibes at Hounddog's.

1. Scott Wiener started a business called Scott's Pizza Tours more than two decades ago.  While in Columbus, Ohio for the Pizza Expo this weekend, he ran a pizza tour around Columbus!

2. After two full days of Pizza Expo, it was time to shut down. I helped Scott close up the Slice Out Hunger booth.

3. Meeting Scott for pizza is always an adventure. Although we didn't meet up until 9:45pm in Columbus, Ohio (a city that does sleep) we still managed to hit up three pizzerias. Granted we were sort of kicked out of all three since they were closing but still.
