DAY 1, Pizza Month 2009 - Motorino (E. Village)

DAY 1: OCTOBER 1st, 2009

LOCATION: Motorino (12th St. and 1st Ave, NYC)

ORDER: 1 individual Margharita

GUEST(S): Garrett Palm

REVIEW:
Finally an answer to the age old question posed by Night Ranger, "Motorin[o], what's your price for flight?" The answer is about $25 (including tax, tip, and Italian soda). After a day of boutique E. Village cafe hopping or before an infamous LES rock show, Motorino is situated in the heart of all - the very space recently vacated by Una Pizza Napoletana. How does Motorino stack up against its predecessor? A worthy replacement says my tastebuds and wallet. The same imported Italian oven produces similar Naples style taste at a fraction of the cost. To be fair that fraction is 14/24 (7/12 when reduced to lowest terms). As expected with the Napoli way, you will find a thick outter rim of firm-yet-chewy crust surrounding a spanse of savory tomato sauce speckled lightly with fresh mozzarella cheese. Some may argue there isn't enough cheese or that it wasn't "evenly distributed"...I felt it was nearly perfect and, in my experience, enhanced the individuality of the masterfully crafted pie. The underside is just architecturally sound enough to fold and pick up but I recommend using both hands. A single individual pie filled me up but I don't think I could ever get enough of the tomato sauce. I'd love that recipe. Of course, I'd mess it up so maybe I'll just have to keep coming back to Motorino.

MISC.:
1. The video contains my first shower scene.

2. Garrett Palm and I made a ritual of going to Una Pizza Napoletana nearly every pizza month. Now that Motorino, a "worthy replacement" I might add, is in the same location, I felt it necessary to come to Motorino with him.

3. Pizza Month begins again!

Pizza Month 2009

Happy Pizza Month '09!

According to many unofficial websites, October is National Pizza Month. In order to observe this month "the right way", I intend to eat at least a slice of pizza a day. I hope to learn from past experience (Pizza Month '02, '03, '04, '05, '06, '07, '08) and make Pizza Month '09 not just the latest, but the greatest 31 Days of Pizza known to [this] man.

My rules are clear, and I am determined to adhere to all three of them. They are…
(1) Eat at least one slice of pizza a day
(2) With at least one other person
(3) At a different pizza place each day

As with past years, I encourage everyone reading this to eat pizza every day of October as well. If you can't stomach 31 days, then settle for 30 (or 29, or 28…) Also, if you are in the NYC metropolitan area, know a great place to eat pizza, and don't mind the company…then please invite me along! No matter how you plan to observe National Pizza Month '09, always feel free to follow me in my pursuit of the 31 days on this journal. For a preview of what is to come, you may want to view the archived Pizza Month '08, Pizza Month '07, Pizza Month '06, Pizza Month '05, Pizza Month '04, Pizza Month '03, and Pizza Month '02 journals as a reference.

ANNOUNCEMENT: My eighth annual celebration of National Pizza Month (i.e. October) will be tracked here. Last year, Pizza Month '08 was a video journal of some of the greatest pizza places in and around New York City, Chicago, and New Orleans. This year I intend to eat pizza at places I have never been before but will likely include some of my old favorites.

Come back here each day to follow my progress toward my goal of conquering the 31 Days of Pizza!
